Digestive
Tract
Appendix
Appendicitis is a common surgical disease that requires an
emergency operation. The laparascopic technique is the treatment
of choice in my practice. Some patients with delayed diagnosis
or complications may require an open procedure.

Stomach and
Duodenum
Surgical treatment of gastric cancer includes a partial or
complete resection of the stomach. Oversewing of a perforated
gastric or duodenal ulcer can be done using the laparoscopic
technique. Occasionally, for different reasons, endoscopic
or open gastrostomy surgery is performed.

Small
Intestines
Surgery on small intestines is done most often in the case
of a bowel obstruction and is combined with the lysis of adhesions
or repair of the hernias. These procedures can be performed
on selected patients using the laparoscopic technique.

Gallbladder
and Biliary Ducts
Gallstone disease and biliary dyskinesia are the most common
problems treated by general surgeons. Laparoscopic operations
can be performed on over 95% of these patients. Occasionally
exploration of the main duct needs to be performed to remove
the retained stones, however, the majority of these procedures
are done by a gastroenterologist after the operation.

Abdominal
Groin Hernia
I use only a preperitoneal approach with the use of mesh
to groin hernia repair. I offer laparoscopic procedures in
the majority of bilateral hernias. Unilateral hernias are
repaired using a small incision.

Ventral
and Incisional Hernia
Abdominal wall hernias are performed with the use of prosthetic
material to prevent recurrence and to strengthen the abdominal
wall closure. Laparoscopic and open techniques can be successfully
applied to this type of surgery.

Hiatal
Hernia and Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
I have a particular interest in the surgical treatment of
Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. The laparoscopic approach
(Nissen fudnoplication) allows patients to stop taking antacid
medications and enjoy freedom from heartburn.

Reflux Disease, please visit:

Omentum,
Mesentery and Retroperitonum
Occasionally we have to explore the peritoneal cavity for
rare diseases of the omentum, mesentery or retroperitoneum,
mainly as a laparoscopic exploration. Staging for malignant
disease or biopsy of the abnormal lymph nodes is frequently
done during such procedures.

eg. ITP. Laparoscopic operations can be safely performed in
these cases.
