Consultation
More than 25% of adult American population is affected by varicose veins. They are most frequently the manifestation of underlying pathological changes with the blood backflow increasing the pressure on the wall of the vein. The malfunction of the venous valves is the major cause of such dysfunction.
The initial evaluation of the patient includes assessments of general patient medical condition and focuses on the origin and severity of the venous disease. Varicose veins may appear as bulging, twisted rope like subcuticular structures frequently associated with well recognized symptoms of generalized, dull leg pain after prolonged period of standing, leading to swelling, edema and even hyperpigmentation or ulceration. In rare situation the venous disease can be manifested by inflammation, blood clots or bleeding.

Duplex Ultrasonography
Ultrasound examination of the venous system is also called “vein mapping”. Duplex system allows the real time evaluation of the anatomy and function of the venous system. Based on the research on the normal valve function, backflow greater than 0.5 second is recognized to be pathological. If the prolonged time of reflux is associated with the varicose veins than the condition might warrant therapy. Our equipment, Accuson X150, ensures the best quality of the ultrasound examination.
We offer Duplex study to all our patients during initial consultation.

Compression Stockings
Compression therapy benefits the patients with venous disease. The medical compression stockings provide gradually decreasing pressures (30-40 mmHg) that create gradient promoting return of the blood and reducing venous reflux. Compression stockings are worn daily and they are used frequently as the supplemental treatment with EVLT, phlebectomy and sclerotherapy. Additional intervention in form of lower extremities exercises with emphasis on ankle flexions, avoidance of high heels and leg elevation at rest have benefits and improve patients’ condition.

Endovenous Laser Therapy
EVLT over last few years gained opinion of the standard treatment for varicose veins. The procedure can be performed in the physician office under local analgesia in less than 60 minutes. During procedure a small laser fiber is introduced through the needle access site and positioned under ultrasound guidance in the affected vein. The light energy is delivered gradually over the length of affected vein causing it to close.

Sclerotherapy
Obliteration of the abnormal vein through the process of vascular fibrosis can be triggered by injection of the sclerosant. This technique is mainly used for treatment of the small and spider veins.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Superficial varicose veins can be removed via small incisions (less than 4 mm) placed a few centimeters apart with good aesthetic result. This procedure can be performed in the physician office under local analgesia.
